  1. France
    - Over 2/3 of the men from France has been killed or injured
    - Enormous damage to its land industry.
    - German seems to be a threat against France
    - Wanted to cripple German as much as possible so German could no longer attack France
    - Wanted Germany to be broken up into smaller states
    England
    - Middle ground between Clemenceau and Wilson
    - Wanted Germany to be punished but no to harsh
    - Still wanted trade with Germany because trade was a source of employment for England – second largest trading partner
    - Wanted to get rid of German’s navy and its colonies because Britain thought they threatened the British Empire
    America
    - Wanted world peace
    - Didn’t want the treaty to be too harsh because one day it might recover and seek revenge
    - Strengthen democracy in the defeated nation so that its people would not let the leaders cause another war
    - Wanted to establish the league of nations and the fourteen points were the base of the league

  2. At versailles, Clemenceau's France wanted the Germans to be crippled by reparations as France had been damaged vastly by WWI and because they saw that the Germans were completely at fault for WWI. Lloyd George's Britain wanted to reduce the Germans navy as Germany's advancements of warships in the First World War threatened Britain's dominance of the seas, but they wanted small reparations so they could maintain strong trade links. Finally Wilson's America wanted the League of Nations set up and democracy in the defeated nations as they felt threatened by communism.

  3. The main outstanding points that the 'Big Three' wanted to make during Versailles was that Germany was at fault for the first world war. However, different countries wanted different degrees of fault given to Germany. The three countries were represented by Georges Clemenceau (French Prime Minister), Woodrow Wilson (President of the United States of America) and Lloyd George (Prime minister of Great Britain). The main objective of the "Big Three" was so that there never is another war again. First of all, Clemenceau wanted revenge for France and wanted to make Germany pay for the damages that happened in France. He also wanted Germany weakened so that France could never be invaded again. However Wilson wanted a fair and just peace that would end all the wars. He wanted disarmament and a League of Nations. Finally Lloyd George wanted to make Germany pay because he knew it's what the British people wanted, but he also said he wanted 'justice' and did not want revenge either. He was the middleman in the sense of not wanting to go either way with the choice, very "in-the-middle"

  4. Fay/Pam -this is excellent. A strong summary. How do you think a treaty could have been produced that would have satisfied all of the big three? DO you think that the final T. of Versailles was actually quite close to that?

  5. Andrew, also excellent. Good summary. Look at Fay/Pam's one too. What specifically did France want in order to 'cripple' Germany? This kind of detail is needed for the highest marks.

  6. Alvi -very srtong response. Like Andrew can you think of the specifics that France and also Britain wanted that they felt would satisfy their demands?

  7. Mr smith - it would have been impossible to satisfy all three countries/leader's demands especially France and America's demands as they were almost completely opposite.

The treaty of Versailles came quite close to trying to satisfy all these demands. However, it didn't satisfy any of the countries. For France it wasn't extreme enough but for America it was too extreme but they did get the League of Nations. Britain gained land and Germany's empire was weakened just as they wanted. However, the reparations had weakened Germany so they were unable to trade which dissatisfied them.

  8. Clemenceau wanted Germany to be divided into smaller states so that they would be less of a threat when they are not together as one. Also he wanted them to pay huge reparations to prevent them being able to afford to rebuild.

  9. Clemenceau wanted Germany to pay war reparations for the damages with in France and extra to any expenses on the war. This is because during the war, two thirds of the French army either died or was injured, this is why Clemenceau felt so strongly that revenge on Germany should be taken.
The British, or in this case Lloyd George, thought or knew that the British empire (their overseas colonies) and navy were threatened by Germany. This is mainly why George wanted to weaken this department of Germany, also he was under pressure from the public to make Germany pay for the war.
